Plant America…Grow Our Legacy
The objectives of the Avon-on-the-lake Garden Club shall be to promote the interests and knowledge of members and the community in home gardening and floral design, and to encourage and participate in civic planting and conservation.
As a 501c# organization that performs educational and garden club related activities, the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club’s objectives promote interests and knowledge of members and the community in home gardening and floral design, as well as to encourage and participate in civic planting and conversation.
The Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club is an affiliate member of the Garden Clubs of Ohio, National Garden Club, and Holden Forests and Gardens. The club originated in 1930. Part of its civic work includes designing, procuring, and maintaining nine civic gardens within Avon Lake. Three of these gardens are historic gardens. The Club also includes events that educate the public about conservation, water management, pollinators, native plants, soil development and composting. The Garden Club protects rare native plants and has won Ohio and national awards for its efforts. Our organization interacts with Heritage Avon Lake (HAL), the Avon Lake Public Library (ALPL), the Avon Lake Public Schools, and the City of Avon Lake to educate the community about gardening, conservation, and other environmental concerns. It was named the Garden Club of the Year in 2012 and 2016 by the Garden Club of Ohio.
The 2024-2025 President’s Project is to reinstate a mentorship program. Mentoring new club members is a great way to foster a sense of community and ensure a smooth transition for those joining the club.
The first step will be to recruit current members as mentors. They will be provided a checklist of topics essential to the club which they can share with the newest members. Topics include the club’s mission, civic projects and gardens, fundraisers, program schedule and hostess duties. Establishing a personal connection creates a supportive environment where new members feel welcomed and encouraged to engage in garden club activities.
The Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club meets at the Avon Lake Public Library the first Thursday of the month at noon, September through June. The Club is open to anyone interested in the objectives of the Club.
